Assael to convert Grade II listed school in East London to residential
Assael Architecture, in association with Cluttons planning department, has won planning consent to redevelop the Grade II Central Foundation Girls School in Bow, East London.
Located within the Tredegar Square Conservation Area, the listed heritage building will become redundant as pupils move to new facilities.
On behalf of the Central Foundation Girls School Board of Trustees, Assael has realised the development potential of the building to provide a range of one, two, three and four bedroom homes of which 24 are for private sale and 12 are affordable.
Utilising the majority of the existing building fabric and retaining many of the internal features, which will be preserved and enhanced, the existing spaces have been carefully designed to provide contemporary residential accommodation. The main central school hall will retain its original integrity, providing communal space for entrances with access to duplex apartments through the existing classroom doors.
A 1960’s home sciences block will be demolished and replaced with a new residential building designed in sympathy with the surrounding heritage buildings. The existing tarmacked courtyard will form a new car-free landscaped communal amenity space with front doors to residential units leading off the space.
Director, Niall Cairns of Assael, says: “This project provides an excellent opportunity to adapt and reuse an existing local landmark to provide new, high quality residential accommodation. Our design enhances and preserves the original features and key spatial elements of the 1900’s building, breathing life back into the building as a whole.”
