Proposals unveiled for a new Hammersmith ‘Flyunder’
Last night, exciting proposals for a new Hammersmith flyunder were revealed in West London.
Assael is one of the leading architects involved with the design proposals for a brand new tunnel to supercede the Hammersmith Flyover, which will need replacing in a matter of years.
The steering group ‘West London Link Design’ was formed last year and the initial design concept revealed at the London Festival of Architecture. The latest proposal unveiled at Hammersmith’s Town Hall is a tunnel between Hogarth Roundabout and Earl’s Court. It aims to offer a viable and sustainable solution for the future while creating a unique opportunity for West London to improve the quality of their world.
The current flyover has a finite life of as little as 15 to 29 years, just long enough to plan and build a replacement. The feeling is that a tunnel would be the best solution as it would prevent long-term disruption to the highway network around the M4 and creates wider financial and cultural opportunities for West London.
A tunnel would also reduce pollution and create more homes and workplaces for Hammersmith whilst reuniting it and neighbouring Chiswick and with the river.
A number of sketches of the developing proposals were shown at the presentation at Hammersmith Town Hall last night.
