Assael continues to acts as Benefactor to help RIBA Drawings Collection
The Assael Architectural Scholarship has been specifically set up to continue supporting RIBA students by funding research and curatorial work on the Drawing Collection at the RIBA.
The RIBA collection of drawings, held as part of the RIBA Library Drawings and Archives Collections, is the largest and most important collection of British architectural drawings in the world.
It currently numbers over 1 million drawings and celebrates the achievements of British architects from the Renaissance to the present day. It also contains important drawings by foreign architects dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Drawings Collection holds many topographical drawings, the most important of which are probably the views of Greek antiquities painted between 1751 and 1753 by James ‘Athenian’ Stuart, later engraved for the ‘Antiquities of Athens’, and William Daniell’s views of India.
Assael has been supporting the preservation and research of these historical collections by donating an annual £5,000 contribution to the fund.
John Assael, Chairman comments: “Over the last five years we have given £25,000 to the Drawings Collection, specifically to conserve the Erno Goldfinger collection. The RIBA holds the largest collection of architectural history in the world and I feel that everyone should do their bit to ensure that students are able to research and help preserve this remarkable material for future generations.”
